A day out on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a fantastic day out. Drive the 15 minutes from our cottages to Pickering where the NYMR starts and jump on a train that takes you on 26 mile journey through the very heart of the North York Moors National Park all the way to the historic seaside town of Whitby.  Whilst in Whitby go to the Abbey, have a pint at the Whitby Brewery and eat fish and chips on the quay side before getting on a return service back to Whitby.

Alternatively, take the train to one of the many stations on the route and go for either a circular walk or walk to another station and then take the train back.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway with the introduction of the Unlimited Annual Pass joins the ranks of many other local tourism attractions that now offer 12 month access, including the Ryedale Folk Museum and the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington.

Festivals and Galas

This year the North Yorkshire Moor Railway celebrates its 50th Annual Steam Gala from the 21st to the 24th September.  Where aside from the usual engines there will be visiting steam engines.  Levisham Station also plays host to beer and cider festival at the same time.

New for 2023 there will be a “Through the Decades – 40s – 70s” festival on the 14th and 15th of October.

Stay at Cliff House Holiday Cottages

Our five dog friendly self catering holiday cottages are just a 15 minute drive from the main terminus of the NYMR in Pickering.  After a day on the rails, why not come back to spend time in our indoor heated pool, or in our larger cottages unwind in front of an open log fire.  We are a perfect base for exploring North Yorkshire.  Whether that is spending time in the seaside towns of Whitby, Scarborough or Filey. Or visiting Flamingo Land (just 20 mins away) or the Castles of North Yorkshire.  There is always something to do on a holiday at Cliff House.
