Last week we took a trip to Hull. Now Hull is a long way from anywhere being as its just on the eastern edge of the East Riding of Yorkshire, but…hear us out – it is fantastic place to visit.

With a thriving pub, cafe and restaurant scene near the marina to a historical quarter full of free museums and old buildings, there is more to Hull than you think. The council run museums are great, with one museum concentrating on social history and another on archaeology with a collection Roman mosaics and a preserved dug out canoe.

Kingston upon Hull, to give it its Sunday name, has some very old pubs, one allegedly famous for having the smallest window in England and one (The White Hart), being the place where it was agreed that the city would close its gates to the procession of Charles I – and in doing that fed in to the start of the English Civil War.

Hull is backdrop to many films, acting as a stand in for Old London and, so Alastair has been told, one building is the inspiration for the wand shop in Harry Potter. Hull is about 1hr 20mins from us here at Cliff House across the beautiful landscape of the Yorkshire Wolds.

If you’re looking for more holiday inspiration we’ve created our very own “Insider’s Guide to North Yorkshire” in it we share some of the top things to do when on holiday here. To down load your copy, please visit here.
