Wharram Percy Medieval Village

Places to Visit

Wharram Percy is an abandoned medieval village south of Malton situated in the Yorkshire Wolds – its about 15 miles from our holiday cottages.  It is one of the best examples of a medieval village that there is.  Despite that there isn’t an awful lot to see, save for the vague outlines of the buildings and an interesting ruin of a church.  What makes the church interesting is that you can see how the church has grown and then subsequently shrunk over the years.  There is a good number of interpretation boards dotted throughout the site.  These will help you understand what all the lumps and bumps are that you are looking at.

It is an ideal spot for a picnic lunch, looking over the church.  For the walker there are two gentle circular walks from the car park (that can be joined up in to a bigger walk).  One of these walks follows the old track bed of a railway that linked the market town of Pickering with the port of Kingston upon Hull.  Both walks use parts of the Yorkshire Wolds Way long distance footpath.

For the mountain bikers amongst you, part of the Yorkshire Mountain Bike marathon comes close to the village.

For more information about Wharram Percy, visit English Heritage’s website.
