Wheeldale Roman Road

Places to Visit

A visit to Wheeldale Roman Road (OS Grid Ref: SE 80372 97322) Β is definitely one to combine with visits to other places ( try Cawthorn Roman Fort and Pickering Castle).Β  This mile long stretch of probably Roman Road on Wheeldale Moor is worth a brief stop.Β  If the weather is good maybe have a picnic (OS Grid Ref: SE 80292 97024) by the ford, where the modern road crosses the Wheeldale Beck.

Wheeldale Roman Road is thought to have linked the Roman camp at Cawthorn with the fort at Lease Rigg, and perhaps on to the coast and Roman signal towers.Β  However, due to the construction of the road, there is a difference of opinion as to whether the road is Roman or not, with some thinking that it may be Saxon or Medieval.
